The Plot

Abby Richter is a romantically challenged morning show producer whose search for Mr. Perfect has left her hopelessly single. She's in for a rude awakening when her bosses team her with Mike Chadway, a hardcore TV personality who promises to spill the ugly truth on what makes men and women tick.

The Review

The Ugly Truth sucks. It not only sucks, it super sucks. It is not funny, overly predictable, lacks any sort of depth, and one of those movies you will forget existed until it shows up late night on TBS (hello Bewitched!). I did not laugh once through the whole thing, and was actually a little bit insulted at the way men were portrayed as cavemen. Yes, we like sex, but to assume that's all we ever think about is so pathetic, it's almost sad. This movie felt like it was written by women who were scorned in relationships and thought they knew how guys work. It's generic rom-com crap like this that does not allow us to evolve; I like a good romantic comedy, but the majority of them are like this: vapid, boring, unfunny, and status quo.

Katherine Heigl plays the same character from 27 Dresses and everything else she's ever done, moving the female race forward with her portrayal of a psycho obsessive "I'm not complete unless I have a man" girl. Gerard Butler kicks ass as usual, but you can hear his accent bleeding through every line. He needs to either strengthen it up or just give up playing Americans, because it's not believable when you start sounding Scottish halfway through your lines.

I'm sure girls will find this funny, like they did with The Proposal. If you're a guy, avoid this and if you're on a date, definitely avoid this because it'll make girls question everything you do because the movie will make you look like a one dimensional ass, even if you aren't. If you want a good romantic comedy, rent Three to Tango or When Harry Met Sally.

However, since people like Katherine Heigl because they are stupid, I'm sure if you're a girl you'll see this any way. Just don't blame me if your boyfriend dumps you because you assume everything you saw in this film was right.

Jon, You're right. It was lame because we've seen this same type of movie 362352 times, but I liked it anyway, because, like you said, girls will like it. It's not the type of movie we fall in love with, and not even one of the mindless ones we'll buy and watch over and over again (it's not good enough for that), but if i'm looking for something to do on a saturday night, it's the type of movie I'd like to go see once. Plus Gerard Butler is in it... enough said.
